Beloved Spokane venue The Bartlett awarded Atari Ferrari with Best Rock Band and Best Local Release for their album Rebel in 2019.
In 2021, Easy Action Records gave Matthew his first label release, issuing his album In This Style, a collection of Marc Bolan songs, on red vinyl & including him on their Elemental Child: The Words & Music of Marc Bolan release in 2022.
The Inlander named Matthew and his band as Best Local Band and Best Singer-Songwriter in 2023.
Matthew has performed in London, New York City, Hollywood, Seattle, and Portland, but mainly records and performs close to home in Spokane.
He released his most recent solo record Remember When We Were All Lovers in September 2024, available on vinyl, CD, and streaming.
Automatic Shoes is the solo project of Matthew Joseph Hughes, frontman for the Spokane band Atari Ferrari. His discography includes over a dozen full-length, self-produced albums of original songs in addition to assorted EPs and singles.
Classic Rock Magazine has called Automatic Shoes "a sparkling pocket of melodic introspection," referring to Matthew as a "pop-rock maverick... one of those artists who deserves to be better known than he is."
